Anyone wanting to sell an online course quickly ends up at the big course platforms. Understandable: upload your videos and everything is taken care of. But you pay twice — a hefty commission per sale, and something worth far more long-term: the customer relationship. The platform knows your student; you get a payout.
For Leer Online Boekhouden we flipped that. A complete learning platform on WordPress with WooCommerce and Sensei: course sales with iDEAL, a personal learning environment with per-lesson progress, automatic certificates and its own customer portal. Zero percent commission, one hundred percent own customer data.
Under the hood it runs on its own VPS with Bedrock, hardening, daily backups and analytics. That sounds technical — and it is — but the point is precisely that the owner never notices. Courses sell themselves, certificates send themselves, and the platform is his, not an American marketplace's.
The maths differs per business, but it's almost always worth doing: what does an own platform cost once, versus what a commission platform skims off every single year?
